The Group Battles eased the strain for me, since I picked half of the songs from each group. In each group I chose my three favorite songs to continue on to the final round (I chose two songs from Group I). I assigned the lowest six ID numbers to “Group A”, following six ID numbers to “Group B”, and the next six ID numbers to “Group C”, etc. I took out my handy graphing calculator and assigned each of the 52 songs a random ID number from 0001 to 9999 (for example, Especias “ Ya.Me.Te” was song #9392 while GEM’s “ Do You Believe” was song #3939) and ordered the songs by ID number. My short list ended up being 52 songs long. Even though I limited Morning Musume to one song per single, I still think I had too many of their songs on the Short List (I probably could have axed Egao no Kimi wa Taiyou Sa, which is strange if you look at my top 12). In particular, Morning Musume ’14 appeared on the Short List three times (the group released 3 singles in 2014). In hindsight, some groups were over-represented on the list. I just felt the one song was the strongest representation for the group (even though a song like “ Tora Tora TIger” or ” Bucchake Rock’n Hacchake Roll” could have done serious damage on the list). I did not do so because I didn’t like the rest of the songs. For example, I liked all of the releases from Babyraids this year (this was a tiny bit unexpected), but I chose to only ‘Pass’ “Koi wa Panic”. If you are one of those people who only listen to a small bubble of artists, I recommend going on a journey like mine!Īs I listened to the songs on my playlist, I took notes on all of the songs and graded songs on a simple ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ system to create a “Short List”. This is what vacations are for, right? Take a few hours out of the day and listen to unfamiliar groups and unfamiliar songs! Now, I can’t say I was blown away by the many new groups and songs I heard since so much of the songs I heard felt flat and uninspired. If you follow me on Twitter, you were probably tired of hearing me go on and on about the songs I was hearing. Over the course of the next three days, I listened to everything that I had not yet heard. This gap was even more difficult to overcome since many of my idol friends that listen to the 48/46 groups dismissed this year’s crop of music almost universally. One glaring gap in my listening history was almost all of the music that came out of AKS.
Even though I think I do a better than average job of listening to a range of artists, I think I got in a bit of a rut. To begin the process, I went to New School Kaidan’s painstakingly curated Idol Release Calendar and picked out 148 songs that I had either heard, was interested in learning about, or had been recommended through Twitter (I actually listen to your tweets!). And then there was Bitter & Sweet’s “Dare ni mo Naisho”. Some songs made it further up the list than I anticipated. In this way, I acknowledge that the list isn’t necessarily the absolute list of my likes for the year. To explain this process simply, think about the World Cup. The second reason I decided to make this list was that I found a novel way to approach the list. Lots of idol groups have been popping up of late, and without this project I feel like I was missing many groups that I would love. Firstly, this undertaking provides me the motivation to look and listen at a wide cross-section of idol music. I agreed to this undertaking for a couple of reasons. Regardless, my idol friends on Twitter (you know who you are) provided me with enough motivation to attempt an end of the year list of idol releases. For someone like me, who likes and tries to find value in the littlest of things, every decision involves a heart wrenching choice.
